We are pleased to suggest other sites which may be useful to people interested in medical malpractice issues. We are not affiliated with any of these other sites and thus are not responsible for their content.
Licensing and Disciplinary
Information:
We begin a Georgia doctor search by
visiting the website of the Composite State Board of Medical Examiners
(also known simply is the "Medical Board"). That site allows us to
verify the name, address, specialty and license status, such as active or
suspended. If the Board has
previously taken disciplinary or some other public action against the physician, it will
indicate that with a "yes". Click on the
"yes" to learn whether the order is available online in
downloadable pdf format. The Medical Board is attempting to post
copies of public board orders online for those Georgia practitioners
disciplined by the Medical Board in the past ten (10) years. This is an
ongoing project and if the public order you want to see for a particular
physician is not available online you will need
to call or write to the Board to request a copy. Here is
contact information for the Board:
| Composite State
Board of Medical Examiners Attn: Ms. Sharon Cloud, Public Records Unit 2 Peachtree Street, N.W., 36th Floor Atlanta, Georgia 30303 PH: (404) 657-6494 FX: (404) 656-9723 |
The Medical Board requires a written, signed and dated request for certified public documents. They will not honor telephone requests for records, and they will not read the document to you over the phone. There is a photocopy fee of $.25 (25 cents) per page and an additional fee of $5.00 per order for certified copies. Payment must be received before the documents will be mailed out. Please email Ms. Sharon Cloud at scloud@dch.state.ga.us or fax your request to the number above and she will assist you in determining the cost of the document(s) you need.
To look up licensing information of many other types of professionals in Georgia, you should visit the website of the Georgia Secretary of State.
Law Suit Information:
Open and ongoing lawsuits, or lawsuits resulting in
judgments against physicians which are now closed can usually only be
reliably found by going to the individual
Court locations in each county where the physician may have
been sued. This of course is extremely time consuming. Small
counties may give you some of this information over the
phone, but most are too busy, and will invite you to come in
and attempt to look it up yourself. Very few malpractice
cases are in federal court (usually only VA related
cases).
Other Sources of Doctor Information
To see a list of other medical board websites from states other than Georgia = Other State Medical Boards
To get some very basic information about any physician, no matter what state she is in, we go to the American Medical Association Physician Select site. This site claims to provide information on virtually every licensed physician in the United States and its territories, including more than 650,000 doctors of medicine (MD) and doctors of osteopathy or osteopathic medicine (DO). Searches can be done by physician name or by medical specialty. Results include generic information like address, specialty, medical school and residency programs attended, and whether or not board certified. It does not include any of the negative stuff, like malpractice suits or payments, or discipline history.
We sometimes will visit the site of the American Board of Medical Specialties to check on board certification. This is also a good place to learn about board certification requirements.
When physicians work for hospitals, sometimes we find information about them by looking up hospital web sites. Here is a link to a site that will help you do that for Georgia hospitals (will open in new window). On occasion we are able to find information about doctors affiliated with medical schools by looking up medical school web sites.
Don't forget to "Google-ize" the Doctor
One growing source of information that should never be
overlooked is simply to do a general Internet search on the
doctor using one or more of the popular Internet search
engines, like Google.
We sometimes perform a free Medline
search at the site of the National Library of Medicine to
see if the doctor has published any articles.
